About the Global Research University Profiles

In order to find the positions of Chinese universities in the world, the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University developed the first multi-indicator global university ranking – Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which uses six objective indicators to rank universities worldwide. Ever since its first publication in 2003, ARWU has attracted a great deal of attention from universities, governments and public media all over the world. One of the factors for the significant influence of ARWU is that it only employs data originated from third parties so that the reliability of data and result is ensured. Nevertheless, the available third-party data on world universities is rare; therefore only a very limited number of useful indicators can be generated, which can hardly meet the increasing needs for the comparisons of global universities from various perspectives.

In January 2011, the CWCU initiated the Global Research University Profile (GRUP) project, which aims to develop a database on the facts and figures of around 1500 global research universities who are those ranked by ARWU annually. And from 2016 onwards, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy will be responsible for conducting the GRUP Survey. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is a full independent organization dedicated to research on higher education. It is the official publisher of the Academic Ranking of Word Universities. The online survey of the GRUP is designed to fulfill such purpose, which will collect the basic information of your institution such as number of academic staff, number of students, total income, research income and so on. Based on the data reported by research universities, an online GRUP platform was developed for enabling comprehensive comparisons of global research universities (http://archive.shanghairanking.com/grup/survey/index.html). The GRUP platform allows users to view and compare universities in different rank ranges and/or in different regions/countries in terms of 35 indicators about students, faculty and resources. It also allows universities to estimate their ranks in Academic Ranking of World Universities based on their actual or expected data on these indicators.

The data gathered from the GRUP survey will be used for the following purposes:

Display. Participating institutions will be searchable and displayed on the website of ARWU (http://www.shanghairanking.com/institution). The general information of participating institution will be published also. In addition, you could publish various news of your institution on the website of ARWU.
